We accept poetry and art in all its forms, as long as it is honest, humble, and strong. We especially love work that tells a story or shows us a small snapshot of time.

We do not accept work with erotic themes, violence, or foul language. We also do not accept poetry that is simply a description of strong feelings — emotions have ties to the physical, and we want to see what triggered your emotional landscape. So much of the art we see is about romantic or powerful love, and although we will consider work with these ideas, we prefer to publish something fresh, unique, and striking.

See your preferred genre below for details.

How to submit

To submit, please email us at thefieldguidemag@gmail.com, or click the Submit button below. Submissions are rolling. We publish annually in the Spring (between March – May. See our homepage for the upcoming issue). Please include a short (4 – 6 sentence) bio about yourself as a poet or artist (or both!) with your submission and attach your work as a .doc or .docx or send us a Google doc for poetry and .jpg or .pdf for art.

We accept simultaneous submissions, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Response time is between 3 – 6 months. Please wait up to 6 months before inquiring about your work. Please do not submit again until after you hear back from us.

Publication Rights

We accept original and previously published work, though only unpublished work will appear in print. Please give credit to the original publisher (even if it is yourself).

Poets and artists retain rights to their work published online, but The Field Guide Poetry Magazine must receive first publisher credit if the work is published elsewhere. We will inquire about this before printing your work. Once printed, you will still retain the rights to your work, but we will have exclusive rights from acceptance to publication. After we publish, all rights revert back to the creator.

Featured Poet and Artist

New, unpublished contributors will have a chance to become our Featured Artist or Poet until the next issue. We choose this person about a week before publication day.

The artist will receive a small payment ($30) and will share their work as the cover art for the next issue. The Featured Poet receives $25.

Only emerging and unpublished contributors qualify. Please let us know in the body of your submission email if you are an unpublished artist.

Poetry

Please send no more than 5 poems per submission. Poems can be of any length.

We accept both previously published and unpublished work, but we only include unpublished in our print and PDF magazines (to avoid copyright issues). All accepted work is posted in our online edition.

Poems must be in 12-point font, Times New Roman. You may send your submission in either Microsoft Word or Google Doc, but please email us if you send us a Google Doc so we know to look for it.

Art

You may send up to 10 pieces of artwork. Please send all art pieces as high res. photos. It makes it easier for us to design the print and PDF issues.

Type ART in the Subject line of your submission email.

As with poetry, we will consider both published and unpublished work, but we can only include unpublished work in our PDF and print editions
